Medical Administrative Coder

If you are fascinated with the medical field and the effects the process of diseases, conditions, and illnesses have on the human body and you like research, analysis, and connecting the dots, then a career as a medical administrative coder could be for you. Graduates of our program are in high demand and the demand is only expected to increase over time – in fact, many students secure employment before graduating.

Employers are looking for highly skilled coders, which you will be after completing our program. Your specialized training includes medical ethics, records management, medical terminology, human anatomy, health insurance, medical billing, medical transcription, coding, and Medical MS Office Suites. Plus, you’ll have a significant advantage when it’s time to take your certification, as our program follows the curriculum of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). AAPC is the world’s largest training and credentialing organization for the business of healthcare and BTC is the only program in Wisconsin to partner with AAPC.

With a focus on outpatient coding, you will be prepared for a career working in physician practices, large healthcare and allied health organizations such as clinics, hospitals and foundations, insurance companies, medical publishers, research organizations and medical product manufacturers.

Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the medical and legal aspects of healthcare office practices including confidentiality of health records, release of information, patients' rights, use of health records as legal evidence, informed consent, malpractice, as well as agency, physician, and employee liability
  • Use medical terminology and knowledge of the human body systems in performing essential functions in business health care setting
  • Produce quality medical documents
  • Demonstrate the following professional traits while working in a healthcare office environment: dependability, punctuality, responsibility, acceptable appearance, sound judgment, ethical behavior, flexibility, and adaptability
  • Apply medical coding principles and guidelines for coding, billing, and reimbursement in outpatient settings at entry level proficiency
  • Use computers as a tool for solving problems, collecting data, managing and communicating information, and making decisions
